The Basics: What is Sound Healing?

At its core, sound healing is the use of sound frequencies to shift and balance the body’s energy. Everything in the universe vibrates at a certain frequency, including you. When stress, illness, or emotional imbalances arise, these natural frequencies can become disrupted. Sound frequencies and healing go hand in hand—by using specific vibrations, sound healing helps realign your body’s energy, restoring balance and harmony.

Ancient Cultures & Sound Healing

Long before modern science caught up, ancient cultures knew the power of sound healing:

  • Indigenous tribes use rattles and drumming in ceremonies to connect with spiritual realms and channel energy for healing.

  • Gregorian chants have long been used to deepen spiritual connection and evoke a sense of transcendence.

  • The ancient Greeks used sound in dream chambers called abatons, where music and chanting aided healing through sleep and visionary dreams.

  • Aboriginal Australians: Used the didgeridoo not just as a musical instrument, but as a tool for vibrational healing, believed to assist with muscle tears, broken bones, and energy clearing.

  • Tibetan & Indian traditions: Used mantras, chanting, and instruments like bells and bowls for meditation and chakra balancing.

Today, sound healing is making a resurgence in:

✔ Wellness practices

✔ Corporate wellness programs

✔ Fertility support

Even in conventional settings, sound continues to play a role—tuning forks are still used on the sidelines of sporting events to help detect possible fractures. My own endocrinologist even uses a tuning fork on patients toes to check for numbness, an early sign of nerve damage in diabetes.

Sound Healing Tools & Their Benefits

There are many sound healing tools that can help with stress relief, emotional balance, and physical healing:
Tuning forks – Restore vibrational balance
Crystal Singing Bowls – Open energy channels
Gongs & Binaural Beats – Reduce anxiety & promote sleep

For fertility challenges, chronic pain, or hormone imbalances, sound healing can be especially powerful in restoring harmony within the nervous system and reproductive organs.

🔹 It also supports:

  • Trauma release & emotional processing

  • Deep relaxation through vagus nerve stimulation

The Surprising History of Crystal Singing Bowls

From Silicon Valley to Sacred Sound

Most people are surprised to learn that the crystal singing bowls we use for healing today actually began as high-tech tools — not spiritual ones.

Back in the 1970s and 80s, during the early days of Silicon Valley, pure quartz bowls were used in the computer industry to grow silicon chips. These bowls, made of 99.9% quartz crystal, were prized for their ability to hold and transmit precise frequencies — the very same quartz that helps keep time in watches and powers your favorite electronics.

One day, someone discovered that when these bowls were gently tapped or played with a mallet, they released a stunning, resonant tone. It didn’t take long before healers and sound practitioners began to notice that these sounds weren’t just beautiful — they were deeply calming, harmonizing, and transformational.

Today, crystal singing bowls have evolved into sacred instruments for healing and meditation. The ones I use are not only made from the same pure quartz, but are also infused with gemstones like amethyst, rose quartz, or citrine — each adding its own energetic signature and intention to the sound.

So when you hear these bowls sing, you’re experiencing a unique blend of science and spirit — ancient wisdom resonating through modern innovation, vibrating through every cell of your being.

Ancient Knowledge Meets Modern Science: My Experience in Mexico

In 2020, I traveled to Mexico to study with a midwife and shaman, diving deep into the wisdom of Mayan Abdominal Therapy. One experience in particular stood out—during a session in the Yucatan Peninsula, I received bodywork from a shaman who used sound as a diagnostic tool.

With nothing more than his hands and trained ears, he lightly tapped on different organs in my abdomen, listening closely to the subtle vibrations each one produced. To me, it sounded like nothing more than gentle tapping, but to him, it was a language of resonance—he could hear “distortions,” small variations in frequency that signaled which organs were healthy and which needed attention.

These ancient sound techniques were once widely used but are only now being understood through modern research. Today, sound healing is emerging as a mainstream wellness practice, proving what Indigenous healers have known for centuries: sound carries the power to restore, realign, and heal.

From Skepticism to Transformation: Sound Healing in the Workplace

Before stepping fully into my private practice, I worked at Google and implemented a Sound Healing program, bringing vibrational therapy into the corporate world. I facilitated dozens of sound baths, both in person and virtually, for employees navigating high-stress environments.

What I found most rewarding were the people who came in skeptical, unsure of how ‘just sound’ could impact their bodies and minds. Time and time again, I’d hear comments like,

  • ‘I wasn’t expecting this to actually work, but I feel incredible—I haven't been this relaxed in years!’

  • ‘Why don’t we have this every day? I came in stressed, and now I feel like I just had the best nap of my life!’

Seeing that shift, from doubt to undeniable relaxation, confirmed what I already knew—sound healing isn’t just an experience; it’s a profound reset for the nervous system, even for those who don’t believe in it at first.

The Science of Energy, Frequency & Vibration: How Sound Affects the Body

To understand how sound healing works, we have to explore two key concepts: frequency and vibration.

  • Frequency refers to the number of sound wave vibrations per second, measured in Hertz (Hz). Different frequencies have different effects on the body and mind.

  • Vibration is how sound moves through a medium—whether air, water, or the human body.

Since the human body is over 70% water, sound doesn’t just stop at your ears—it travels through your entire system, reaching every cell.
Water is an excellent conductor of sound, meaning the vibrations move more efficiently and deeply inside the body than they do in air. In fact, sound travels over four times faster in water, which is why sound healing can feel like a deep tissue massage—the sound penetrates muscles, bones, and organs without physical touch.

These sound waves stimulate movement within the body's fluids, encouraging circulation, lymphatic flow, and even metabolic activity.
Scientific research suggests that certain frequencies can stimulate nitric oxide production, a compound that improves blood flow, oxygenation, and reduces inflammation.
This is one way that sound healing supports conditions like chronic pain, anxiety, and stress-related disorders.

For fertility support

Sound frequencies and healing work together in a powerful way. This is why listening to sound baths while doing Yoni steams can be particularly effective. The combination of warm herbal steam and healing sound frequencies creates a synergy that:

  1. Relaxes the reproductive organs

  2. Improves blood flow to the pelvis

  3. Promotes an optimal state for conception

Cymatics: The Visible Proof of Sound’s Power

If you’ve ever wondered whether sound can truly affect the body, look no further than cymatics—the study of how sound creates visible patterns in physical matter.

In cymatics experiments, when sand or water is exposed to different sound frequencies, it organizes into stunning geometric shapes. Lower frequencies create simple patterns, while higher frequencies form intricate designs. This is a direct demonstration of how sound shapes reality.

Think of this in terms of your own body:

  • If sound can shape intricate patterns in sand and water, imagine the profound healing it can bring to your cells, tissues, and fluids.

  • Essentially the right frequencies help repair, restore, and re-tune your body back to balance.

This is exactly why sound healing is so powerful. It is not just an auditory experience—it is a physical transformation happening inside your body. Cells function optimally when they are organized and vibrating at their natural frequency. When they become disorganized or out of sync, it can be a sign of stress, illness, or imbalance. Cymatics visually demonstrates how sound frequencies can restore structure and harmony—and the same applies to our bodies at a cellular level.

Watch this fascinating cymatics video here.

Furthermore, studies in neuroscience and psychoacoustics suggest that specific sound frequencies influence our brainwaves and emotional states, which is why sound healing is often used in therapy for PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

Sound Frequencies and Healing: How Different Sounds Affect the Body

Over the centuries, different sound frequencies have been used to support healing—each one resonating with a different part of us. You may have experienced this yourself: a song that lifts your mood, a tone that settles your nerves, or a chant that stirs something deep within.

One set of tones known as the Solfeggio frequencies has been especially cherished by sound healers. These specific frequencies are believed to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being by gently realigning the body’s energy centers—often called chakras.

Each frequency carries its own unique power:

  • 396 Hz – Releases fear and guilt

  • 432 Hz – Promotes relaxation and natural harmony

  • 528 Hz – The “love frequency,” associated with DNA repair

  • 639 Hz – Enhances connection and emotional healing

  • 741 Hz – Aids in detoxification

  • 852 Hz – Awakens intuition and higher awareness

While we’ll explore chakras more deeply in another post, just know that these frequencies speak directly to different areas of the body and mind, gently nudging them back into balance. This is why during or after a sound healing session, many women describe feeling lighter, more aligned, or emotionally released—the body is tuning itself back to its natural rhythm.

When it comes to women’s wellness, these frequencies support more than just relaxation:

  • Balancing hormones and reducing stress-related fertility issues

  • Relieving anxiety during the ‘two-week wait’

  • Supporting pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and menopause

  • Easing PCOS and endometriosis symptoms through vibrational therapy

Below, you’ll find a simple chart mapping each Solfeggio frequency to the chakras. It’s a beautiful way to begin exploring how sound can support your healing journey—from the inside out.
